February 17, 1947: L. Ron Hubbard's VA pension begins; he is awarded just $11.50, having been rated 10% disabled after the war. He appeals this small pension, and is granted a new medical exam, but VA doctors are unable to find much physical evidence for the many ailments Hubbard complains of.

December 6, 1945: One day after being mustered out of the US Naval Reserve, Hubbard submits a claim for a pension and disability benefits. He lists a long catalog of problems, though not, significantly, anything that could be described as a combat-related injury: malaria, a sprained knee, conjunctivitis, an ulcer, and arthritis. Strangely, his recurrent malaria had never previously been documented by Navy doctors.

October 15, 1947: L. Ron Hubbard writes to the Veteran's Administration requesting psychiatric treatment: "After trying and failing for two years to regain my equilibrium in civil life, I am utterly unable to approach anything like my own competence. My last physician informed me that it might be very helpful if I were to be examined and perhaps treated psychiatrically or even by a psycho-analyst. Toward the end of my service I avoided out of pride any mental examinations, hoping that time would balance a mind which I had every reason to suppose was seriously affected. I cannot account for nor rise above long periods of moroseness and suicidal inclinations, and have newly come to realize that I must first triumph above this before I can hope to rehabilitate myself at all."

August 10, 1950: Before a large crowd at the Shrine Auditorium Hubbard gives a lecture entitled "Introducing Dianetics" and shows off the world's first "Clear." The event proves to be a humiliating fiasco as Sonya Bianca can perform none of the wonders that a clear is supposed to possess. She is unable to remember basic physics formulas (she was a physics student) or even name the color of Hubbard's tie when his back is turned.

This was certainly poor eyesight but whether it was "legal blindness" is doubtful. There is no record in his file of him having been declared "legally blind".

February 23, 1951: Sara Hubbard informs the national executive officer of the Hubbard Dianetic Research Foundation that competent medical advisors recommended that L. Ron Hubbard be committed to a private sanitarium for psychiatric observation and treatment of paranoid schizophrenia. The executive officer immediately reported this to LRH.
