Scientology Lies

February 13, 1995: Scientology mounts a suprise raid on the home of critic Dennis Erlich. Scientology spends seven hours rummaging through his home in Glendale, California, searching for alleged copyright violations. After learning how the cult conducted the raid, the Judge Ronald H. Whyte, who authorized the raid, declared it to be unconstitutional. The Church sues Erlich, Tom Klemesrud (operator of the BBS that Dennis uses to access the Net), and Netcom (a large Internet service provider that exchanges Usenet news and e-mail with that BBS).

February 7, 1995: 22-year-old Paride Ella begins the Narconon treatment program in Tessa. Within two weeks, he will be dead.

February 18, 1995: Julf Helsinghus, administrator of the anonymous remailer anon.penet.fi, announces the cult has obtained a search and seizure warrant on his home and the server. Eventually, legal pressure caused him to decide to shut the service down.

February 27, 1995: Andrew Milne, OSA PR operative for the cult, posts the first of his many provocative messages, "FAQS Regarding Misconceptions about Scientology"

January 3, 1995: Thomas Small (RTC attorney) emails anonymous remailers requesting that they block access to a.r.s.

February 1, 1995: Koos Nolst Trenite wins a Usenet Kook of the Month award for his posted transcripts of telepathic auditing of dead cult founder L. Ron Hubbard and others.

March 9, 1995: A $8,475 credit is applied to Lisa McPherson's Scientology account, bringing the balance to $23,270.64. The notation is "Wall of Fire Package."

January 14, 1995: Tom Klemesrud and Linda Woolard meet. The alleged frameup of Tom is attempted (or a date turned sour, from Linda's viewpoint). Klemesrud was being harassed by Scientology for being a service provider to critic Dennis Erlich. The bizarre encounter becomes known as "The Miss BloodyButt Affair".
