Scientology Lies

October 1, 1996: The Los Angeles City Council votes on a resolution to rename part of Berendo Street to L. Ron Hubbard Way. The vote is 8 to 3 in favor of renaming the street, but without a unanimous vote, the issue will come up again a week later.

March 8, 1997: During a picket in front of the Ft. Harrison, Lisa McPherson Memorial Page is one of the best Scientology resources on the net.">Jeff Jacobsen asks Brian Anderson how often Brian goes to funerals and asks that the body be cremated. Is this a practice of the church? Brian's answer; "keep moving." About 20 people hold a candlelight memorial for Lisa across from the Ft. Harrison Hotel. About 300 Scientologists crowd the sidewalk, taunt and bump the mourners, and blow out their candles.

October 10, 1996: Netcom sends e-mail to Biased Journalism publisher Shelly Thomson; they've received a complaint about a post she made of the opinion in the Lerma case, which was subsequently placed under seal. Thomson doesn't believe the sealing order applies to her; furthermore, the opinion was unsealed shortly thereafter. Netcom has cancelled the post (Biased Journalism Vol 2 Issue 20). Later in the day, they reinstate the post and send an apology via e-mail.

January 1, 1997: Edith Ervin's son, Joel Ervin, disconnects from her.

January 28, 1997: The Church of Scientology files suit against the Pinellas-Pasco Medical Examiner in an attempt to get access to records of a Scientologist whose death is being investigated. The suit states that because Medical Examiner Joan Wood made comments to the press about the death of Lisa McPherson, all the records from the death investigation should be available to the church.

February 1, 1997: 'Remote Viewers: The Secret History of America's Psychic Spies' is published. "A fast-paced look at remote viewers at Stanford Research Institute [SRI] and Fort Meade, a U.S. Army base." It has a small amount about Scientology; remote viewing participants Pat Price, Ingo Swann, and Harold Puthoff were all involved with Scientology. [published in Feb 1997; exact date unknown]

November 25, 1996: Critic Jeff Jacobson notices the Clearwater, Florida police have put up a Web page asking for information on the death of a woman named Lisa McPherson. ARS sees it's first posting about Lisa.
