La Venda Van Schaick was Hubbard Communication Area Secretary in Las Vegas for four years. She left
Scientology in 1979. During her time as a
Scientology staff member, she dealt with
Scientology's Guardian Office and observed supposedly confidential auditing folders being sent to the Guardian Office for review. In 1980, she filed a $200-million class-action lawsuit against the Church of
Scientology in Federal Court in
Boston, contending that the church falsely promises to improve the lives of its
members.
A Guardian Program entitled "Shake and Bake" was written by
Scientology management to "handle" Lavenda Van Schaick so that she would not continue with litigation against
Scientology and
L. Ron Hubbard. Part of it was an "information-gathering" section on Mrs Van Schaick, including going through her auditing information.
If I had known that the Church of Scientology throughout the period 1968-79 was actively engaged in elaborate programs to break into, burglarize, and steal from state and federal agencies, defame and smear people with elaborate espionage programs to destroy anyone who stood in Hubbard's path, I would not have worked for the organization or given them money.

| April 2, 1982 | Suit Against Church Whittled | A District Judge has dismissed seven of 14 allegations of wrongdoing against the Church of Scientology by a Boston-area woman and said he will consider whether the First Amendment bars some of the remaining allegations in the $200 million class action suit. The claims were filed by a former member of the church, La Venda Van Schaick, who claimed she was induced into joining the church by false representations, defrauded, subjected to emotional distress, locked in a room, and harassed in many other ways. | |
