January 13, 1980 Scientology Church Files Countersuit Lavenda Van Schaick, a former member of Scientology, filed a $200-million class action suit in US District Court in Boston on behalf of herself and others, charging the organization with fraud. The church has filed a suit in federal court in Las Vegas, charging Van Schaick and one of her lawyers with conspiracy to violate the church's First Amendment right of religious freedom. December 7, 1979 Wife of Scientology Founder is Sentenced to Prison A federal judge yesterday sentenced Mary Sue Hubbard, wife of the founder of the Church of Scientology, to a maximum five-year prison term for conspiring to steal government documents about the church. Judge Richey also fined Mrs. Hubbard the maximum $10,000 and directed her to report to prison in 10 days. The judge also sentencd three other Scientologists to four years in prison and fined them $10,000 each. January 21, 1978 Firemen Fight Blaze at Church of Scientology Toronto firemen were fighting a fire which broke out in the basement of the Church of Scientology at Avenue Road and Bernard Avenue early this morning. The fire, which firemen described as a two-alarm blaze was still out of control at 1 a.m., an hour after firemen were called. No injuries were reported. Ten fire trucks were sent to the scene.
