October 22, 2006 A New Word in Literacy - Scientology Scientology started classes at its Washington Street literacy center with a grand opening that offered free food and sidewalk chalk for children. The church members who staff the literacy center, in a storefront marked with bright-yellow "Boston Scientology Ministry" signs, say they wanted to do something about the increase in violence in Boston, which they attribute in part to poor education. Salon owner Helen Roy said people on the block have noticed the Scientology center but many won't walk inside. Press, space opera
October 15, 2006 Inside the Odd World of Scientology Proponents claim Scientology is a method of counselling that helps individuals break free from negative emotions to live more rewarding and fulfilling lives. However, Scientology's theology is somewhat shaky. In fact, the church's creation myth revolves around an intergalactic warlord named 'Xenu' who kidnaps billions of alien lifeforms, chains them near Earth's volcanoes and blows them up with nuclear weapons. October 8, 2006 Too Much Control, Not Enough Cruise First there was all that sofa-jumping, when Cruise demonstrated his love for new girlfriend Katie Holmes by behaving like a lovesick loon on primetime television. Then came the rumours about how his public devotion to Scientology was turning off the multiplexes. When Cruise suggested Brooke Shields should not have taken antidepressants for her postnatal depression but relied instead on vitamins, he alienated most of his female fans at a stroke. The climax came in August when Paramount announced it was dumping Cruise because his recent conduct had 'not been acceptable'. Press, Tom Cruise

October 3, 2006 Cazares' Blend Of Fire and Kindness Gabe Cazares never shied from a fight, regardless of how powerful the opponent. But he was as kind-hearted as he was feisty, and his community benefited because of his service. In the 1970s the former Clearwater mayor and Pinellas County commissioner - who died last week at 86 - took on the Church of Scientology and overcame the church's efforts to smear him with a phony hit-and-run accident. The government has told internal security forces to step up their scrutiny of the movement, claiming that the Scientologists, which they label a cult, are seeking to take advantage of Germany's ailing education system as a means to recruit children. It has prompted US embassy officials to lobby the German government on the sect's behalf. Germany, Press, Scientology and Society, Stealth Scientology
