Attorney General Candidates, 1998

Scientology has been accused of numerous illegal activities. Are the candidates for Attorney General willing to investigate these allegations?

On October 7, 1998, I sent e-mail to most of these candidates, asking whether they would investigate the accusations against Scientology.

If I couldn't find an e-mail address for a candidate, I probably didn't contact that person. If your candidates were not contacted, please feel free to contact them and ask them to email me at [email protected].

If your state isn't listed below, it's probably because Scientology doesn't have a strong presence in your state, or because your state isn't electing an Attorney General in 1998.

Arizona California Colorado Connecticut Florida Georgia Illinois Massachusetts Michigan Minnesota Nevada New Mexico New York Ohio Texas

The main question I asked:

Do you support a full investigation of these reports, including prosecution for any allegations found to be true, and widely publicizing Scientology's innocence of any allegations found to be false?

Will you initiate such an investigation during your first year in office?

Here's how they've answered:

Mike Angwin gets a gold star - he was the first to respond!

I do not favor isolating the Church of Scietology for specialized treated either with special investigative attention or with special considerations to exclude the chuch from allegations of criminal activity. I do delieve cases of fraud should be handled individually and that to accuse an entire organization of criminal behavior would require a very strong body of evidence.

Q: Do you support a full investigation of these reports, including prosecution for any allegations found to be true, and widely publicizing Scientology's innocence of any allegations found to be false?

A. Neither. We have prosecutorial offices at various levels of government throughout Texas to take allegations of criminal activities and conduct investigations. If crimes are committed, of course, the should, and will, be prosecuted. At the same time, when allegations are made and those accused eventually cleared, individual citizens are not granted any special publicity so I see no reason to grant priviligages to an organization that individual citizens themselves do not enjoy.

Q: Will you initiate such an investigation during your first year in office?

A. No. I do not see this as an appropiate role for the Attorney General's office.
