AMC Publishing offers newspaper, magazine and advertising publications for life and health insurance agents. The company, established in 1990 in Dallas, moved to Clearwater in 1993 with a staff of eight. "We moved here because I'm a member of the Church of Scientology and I wanted to be here," Bennetta Slaughter said. Scientology's spiritual headquarters is in Clearwater.
The Church of Scientology did not show that the author of a 1991 article in Time magazine was malicious in his description of the organization, a U.S. court has ruled. In affirming a lower court's dismissal of a libel action, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit said there was no likelihood that a jury would find "purposeful avoidance of the truth" in an article titled " Scientology: The Cult of Greed" by Richard Behar.

Clearwater Police Lt. Emmons speaks with Inspector Ormsby of the Ontario Crown Attorney's Office, and with Joe Zier, regarding Zier's analysis of Scientology's finances commissioned by the Ontario CAO. Ormsby says Emmons can get a copy of Zier's report if a lawyer comes to Canada and enters a court motion requesting it. Zier says he can't testify in Emmons' investigation, as it would be a conflict of interest with his OCAO work.
