SCIENTOLOGY TRUTHS Editor -- My friend Jeff Quiros got a few things wrong in his recent letter (May 30). First, there are nowhere near 8 million practicing Scientologists; the most generous estimates put the worldwide total between 200,000 and 500,000. Second, his statement that "the movie 'Battlefield Earth' has absolutely nothing to do with Scientology" is not entirely true. Scientology entities licensed the book's film and merchandising rights. Also, anyone familiar with Scientology's hatred of psychiatrists would recognize the film's bad guys, the Psychlos, as barely disguised demonizations of L. Ron Hubbard's archenemies. I am surprised that Quiros couldn't make his point -- that "Battlefield Earth" is not filled with subliminal messages -- without resorting to smears and falsehoods. Maybe the reason people don't believe what they read in the paper anymore is because such inaccuracies aren't corrected.
