Someone purporting to be Chris Maple starts posting excerpts from the official Scientology promotional book "What is Scientology" to the newsgroup alt.religion.scientology, through a mail2news gateway at Yale. This heralds a storm of robo-posted articles that threatens to drown out all other discussion. In less than two months almost 44,000 spam messages will be sent to ARS, making discussion impossible. Scientology had successfully ruined the NG - temporarily. Eventually the spam attack is stopped through technical means, scientology had been beaten again.
